Supporting
Staff of Teachers
-
The staff consists of four other teachers, who
were carefully chosen for their diverse and distinctive qualities they
bring to the program. When meeting with a prospective student, which
teacher can offer the best for your child is foremost in our minds.
We are in constant communication and rely on each other for new ideas,
input and feedback. We encourage the same communication with parents.
Specialization includes beginners, advanced and those who may wish to
be prepared for auditions and contests, and keyboard specialist and
a guitarist.

A faculty of which I am proud!!
| Janet Fitterer, a teacher for
ten years at this studio, and hear what she has to say, why
she loves teaching. Piano Lessons? My first teacher was a
cheerful, talented college student. My next teacher was a
neighbor, then a ministeršs wife. As I progressed, I realized
how happy my music made me feel. I loved it all...patriotic
songs, popular songs from the 1920's through the 1950's, music
written by Bach, Chopin, Beethoven and Mozart, hymns, waltzes
and tangos. I studied for three years with Morris Nanton,
a tremendously talented pianist who performed throughout New
Jersey and New York with his jazz trio. I earned a Bachelor
of Arts degree in piano performance from Kean University,
studying with concert pianist, Carol Ferri (also well known
in the performance field.) Helping others to train their ears,
eyes, and fingers in the art of piano technique is what I
love to do now. Janet also substitutes for vacationing organist
(including Steve Shevlino) at various churches, and accompanies
with background music at private parties. (Sign-a-longs always
available.) |

When I asked Steve Shevlino
to join the staff 12 years ago, it was because I felt the
studio needed someone to whom we could look to when it came
to questions of technique, repertoire and interpretation.
But he brought more to the studio than I could ever imagine.
Steve keeps up with every new musical, and advises us on
the most interesting and rare teaching pieces. He is at
home with teaching beginners as well as the most advanced
student. Steve holds a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in
Piano Performance and Pedagogy from Jersey City State College.
He has also studied at the Julliard School, Westminster
Choir College, and takes courses toward a Doctorate at New
York University with a specialization in biomechanics of
piano technique. Now you know why, whenever I come across
a difficult technical interpretation, I yell down two floors,
Steeve!!!

| James Manno is a born teacher
and the pied piper to talented students who ėdance to a different
drum. He's the Arts Technology teacher at Rafael Hernandez
Performing Arts School in Newark, NJ, where he originated
a program called Creating Original Musical Film. During his
time at Rafael Hernandez School, James has won several grants
for the film program totaling $80,000 from such institutions
as the U.S. Federal Government, The Dodge Foundation, The
Healthcare Foundation of New Jersey and Chase Manhattan Bank.
James has presented this unique program at the New Jersey
Reading Association Conference two consecutive years and was
recently invited to present at the International Reading Conference
in Orlando, Florida in May of 2003. Most recently, James completed
a musical historical and social awareness film with his students
called In the Blink of an Eye, which was awarded the Lights
on Broadway Award for it's artistic and educational contribution
to AIDS awareness for World AIDS Day, 2002. Also, the same
project won a 2003 EMMY Award. The cinematic piece took seventh
and eighth graders 11 months to produce. Not only did the
students write the script and music for the film, but they
also filmed and edited the piece. The Star Ledger Newspaper,
Channel 12 News and Cablevision provided news coverage for
this film project. In addition to being an educator, James
is a producer/composer who owns a music and audio production
recording studio, JAMMAN Productions, where he writes and
produces a variety of music including films scores, jingles,
rap and pop music. Recent projects include an anti-drug and
anti-violence rap album with rapper VBL. Two of the tracks
won awards. Hate Drugs took the New Jersey Fights Back Against
Drugs first place trophy and ėViolence Nowhereî won a DefJam
Records sponsored competition where teenagers rapped themes
of anti-violence. In addition, James was recently featured
in the February issue of EQ magazine, which is a popular Pro
Audio and Recording Industry publication. To check out James'
studio on the web go to www.jammanproductions.com. |

| Phyllis Tantawy and I resemble
each other in musical training. We began our teaching careers
in large school systems, where you get the full spectrum of
musical talent in any one class and a teacher learns to think
quickly on her feet. Her modus operandi was the Hunterdon
Central High School, Flemington, NJ, where she taught orchestra,
music theory, individual and group instrumental lessons. We
even share the same degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Music Education
and a Master of Education in Music. She has nine years of
cello study, and has played extensively with numerous orchestras
in the tri-state area. Phyllis also the Director of Music
at The First Baptist Church of Rahway, where she directs two
choirs and is the organist for church services, and weddings
and other spiritual functions. |
